Cashmere shawl by Carole Waller ‘Palimpsest’ A fine cashmere shawl. Welcome to my first small collection of printed scarves in fine cashmere blended with modal. Modal is made from bamboo and the blend is a lovely soft matte fabric. It is quite different from anything I have used before for scarves, and can be worn all the year round by any gender. The collection is called ‘Duomo’ and is inspired by the small scale paintings and prints I made in Italy during a residency in 2024. I spent a month in a beautiful small hilltown called Barga, dramatically situated between the Apuan Alps and the Emilian Apennine mountain tops in the Garfagnana region of northern Tuscany. I was fascinated by the powerful atmosphere, and by the subtlety of the change of colour and mood in the place as the sun moved around the very tall buildings and the very narrow winding lanes. At the top of the hill is the austere 12th Century Duomo di San Christoforo. The incredible and unearthly vista from the cathedral terrace made me feel completely uplifted. Meanwhile, I tried to bottle these things and paint them. The paintings can be seen here at my studio. The scarves were designed by me directly from the images so they are full of very detailed brushmarks and colour. There are six designs in an edition of 15 scarves per design. They are printed onto a lovely fine cashmere blend fabric which works summer and winter for both men and women. This piece is called ‘Palimpsest’, which in architecture, describes a situation where you can see traces of past structures or uses embedded within newer ones. Outside the kitchen window in my flat I was presented with a most beautiful bricked in window on the back wall of a Palazzo. My drawings and intaglio prints became the source for the design of this scarf. Find black and lots of blues from pale aqua to cobalt, greens and pinks, dark greens, cornflower blue, flashes of bright orange, apricot and emerald in this piece. It measures a generous 200 x 70cm. Wash gently by hand, or dry clean. After wearing, hang your cashmere shawl smoothly over the back of a chair to relax any creases. Cashmere shawl by Carole Waller ‘Palimpsest’ Waller&Wood.
